Event branding & visual design for the first ever Apex Legends collegiate LAN event

The Team

Working together with Alienware, Gerrit Acheson from Oversight Esports brought me on to help create the event branding and graphics for their collegiate Apex Legends tournament.

The Brief

Alienware provided us with some inspirations, referencing styles like sci-fi minimalism and the film Arrival, wanting to give the event visuals a mysterious and distinctly “alien” look to work with their brand identity.

Building around the trophy

The trophy for the event, designed by Volpin Props, became the central focus for our broadcast graphics.

With how well it represented the overall style we were after as well as the desire to focus on themes of competition, we decided to give the trophy the spotlight and experiment with scale, emphasizing its mysterious and alien qualities.

Developing a visual narrative

Using 3d scenes made in blender, we developed a subtly developing narrative throughout the broadcast using the game's characters in pursuit of the trophy. First standing in front of it in the distance, then the characters arms reaching out for it with the trophy in reach, then finally the characters are posing with the trophy as one team wins.

In-Game Overlay

Transitions & Rounded Corners

We made use of the rounded corners found elsewhere in Alienware's visual identity to create a recurring visual element which made it easy to ensure the Alienware logo is always present. We made use of its constant presence by peeling up the corner to reveal the stinger transition.

Visual Design: UI + Glassmorphism

Also borrowed from Alienware's existing design style, the window style UI elements with the blurred fill added to the futuristic sci-fi minimalist aesthetic, while not completely covering the 3d rendered scenes.

Visual Design: Layered Titles

Further building around our core 3d assets, we wanted to add more depth and visual impact to the titles so we layered large text in with the 3d scenes, creating the visual impact we were looking for without taking away any screen space from the trophy and characters.

Contributions

I was the lead designer on this project, working with Gerrit Acheson from Oversight and in collaboration with Alienware. I had a hand in all final assets including print and physical, and was mainly focused on developing the overall style and creating the animated broadcast assets.
